It is difficult driving in the dark. There’s no sun light to depend on by sight. Just an attention-draining mess of man-made headlights and blinkers to guide you badly.
The darkness makes it difficult to discern the distance of things. All those lights vie for your attention with the same intensity. Or at least that’s what it looks like, glancing from mirror to mirror swinging your head around to check the blind spots then eyes back to what’s in front of you—
The darkness and the speed of everything makes it difficult to tell the distance of everything around you and the distance you’ve yet to go.
I prefer driving in the sunlight: it’s brighter. It’s clearer to see what’s going on. But journeying at night is inevitable, and it makes the light that much sweeter when it dawns on you the next morning.
In the meantime I remind myself that the sun still shines even when it is night. No matter where I am it is never dark everywhere. That helps put things into perspective. Sun light helps put things into perspective.
